On intermetallic phases formed during interdiffusion between aluminium alloys and stainless steel

One of the major challenges in welding aluminium (Al) alloys and steels is growth brittle intermetallic phases, which depends on thermomechanical processing history alloying elements. This work focuses phase layers formed roll bonded composites Al alloy 6082 stainless steel 316L after interdiffusion at temperatures range 400 – 550 °C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy characterisation showed that during interdiffusion, an αc-Al15(Fe,Cr,Mn)3Si2 layer first, before a discontinuous τ1-FeNiAl9 Al-αc interface. Subsequently, θ-Fe4Al13 τ11-Al5Fe2Si αc-steel interface, followed by η-Fe2Al5 with precipitates rich Cr Si or Ni. Nanoindentation density functional theory calculations were performed to assess mechanical properties phases. Miniature tensile testing confirmed bond strength decreased as thicknesses increased. Further, it was found rate total significantly reduced for high alloyed 6082-316L compared unalloyed reference 1080-S355. Altogether, this provides insight into combined effects elements Si, Mn, Ni formation, interfacial phases Al-steel joints.
